Sport, Community, and Impact: How Inuka is Driving Community Change
When Brady joined Inuka, he didn’t just volunteer—he stepped up in a big way. Now leading the charge on our first-ever sports fundraising event, The Inuka Open, he’s helping turn our vision into reality. Our charity golf day will raise vital funds to build and equip the first-ever sports field and program at CHETI Schools in Arusha, Tanzania—giving our students the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive through sport.

How did you come to find out about Inuka?
Maeve and I both grew up in Helensburgh and went to primary school together at Helensburgh Public School. We went to different high schools and although we didn’t keep in touch, these days social media always gives us a way to see what people are up to. Through this I became aware of Maeve’s work with Inuka, but it wasn’t until a few years later that I took a genuine interest and decided I wanted to help her out.
What motivated you to join the team as a volunteer?
After some personal reflection, I made the decision that I wanted to do more things that could have a positive impact. I did some research and felt relatively unsure on what I was going to do, particularly as I found out that volunteering for well- established charities isn’t as simple as I first thought it would be. I was close to giving up for the time being but then remembered Maeve’s charity, Inuka. I looked at the website and Instagram, and finally took the time learn about what Maeve had been doing. It was incredibly inspiring, and to this day I still can’t imagine how much hard work and dedication it would have taken. So, I decided I would send her a message and ask if she wanted any help. I wasn’t sure what the answer was going to be, but she was extremely welcoming of my interest and that’s where it all began.
As a volunteer what do you do? What does it involve? And what have you learnt?
Simply put, I help Inuka in any way I can to achieve its mission. Recently, everything has been around planning The Inuka Open, but when I began volunteering mid-last year, I spent a lot of time creating content for the students at CHETI Schools.
Why do you believe the work Inuka is doing is important?
I consider Inuka’s work is incredibly important. Access to education and the opportunity to work is a foregone conclusion for many of us in Australia. In the rural parts of Arusha, this simply isn’t the case, and that is what we are constantly working to change.
In 2025, what are you looking forward to most working with Inuka?
Firstly, The Inuka Open. This is the first event I’ve been a part of since joining Inuka and I couldn’t be more excited. I really do think it will be an awesome day, but I guess you will have to come along and see for yourself! Secondly, I will be travelling over to Tanzania in July with Maeve. This will be the first time I get to see the impact of Inuka’s work in person. I cannot wait to meet all of the amazing people and build my own personal connection to the work we do.
Inuka is an Australian charity that operates in Tanzania, dedicated to building stronger community through education and empowerment projects. Founded by Helensburgh local Maeve Turner, the team was thrilled to welcome Brady, who has quickly become an asset to the team and his efforts have been instrumental in organising our first sports fundraising event.
Currently, CHETI Schools, which educate hundreds of underprivileged children, lack proper sports facilities, limiting students’ access to physical education and the many benefits that come with it. With the funds raised from The Inuka Open, we will construct a 245m x 60m multi-purpose sports field, complete with:
⚽ A soccer pitch to foster teamwork, leadership, and discipline
🏀 A basketball court to build confidence and skill
🤾♀️ A netball court to promote inclusivity and participation
🧘 A dedicated space for stretching and indoor activities to support overall well-being
Why does this matter? Sport is more than just recreation—it’s a tool for education, empowerment, and community building. Access to structured sports programs can improve physical and mental health, boost academic performance, and teach essential life skills like teamwork, resilience, and goal setting.
The Inuka Open, a charity golf day, will raise funds to build a sports field for our schools in Arusha, Tanzania. We are raising fund to build a sports field at CHETI Schools, as we believe children should have the chance to thrive not only academically, but also through sports.
