sayari nyuki
Founded by 19-year old Maeve Turner from New South Wales, Australia, sayari nyuki is a charity that aims to empower change in rural Tanzania.
Working in partnership with Cheti NGO and director, Zuma Mtui, we are providing education in a healthy environment, with an emphasis on sustainability, in the hopes for a progressive and positive future.
What we do…
We work in the rural communities in and surrounding Arusha in northern Tanzania.
help build schools
provide funds needed for projects
assist with maintenance and administrative costs
supply school and play equipment
run girl’s and women’s empowerment projects and workshops
manage micro-finance loans for young mothers and widows
support the boys orphanage attached to our partner NGO
Why we work in Tanzania…
Tanzania is a vibrant East African country with beautiful landscapes and humble people, however it is the;
34th poorest country in the world
3.6 million (approx.) children aged 7-17 years out of school
By law, girls are expelled from and banned from returning to school before, during and after pregnancy.
If a child does not pass the end of Primary School National exams, they will not be allowed to progress onto Secondary School.
By working closely with our Tanzanian partners, we are able to assess, plan and introduce activities that do not conflict with local values or beliefs. We respect the cultural heritage of the Tanzanian people and communities and do not wish to impose and activities they would be opposed to.
Why a bee? The meaning behind sayari nyuki…
sayari nyuki means ‘planet bee’ in Kiswahili, the language of Tanzania. There are many intricate factors that contribute to the meaning behind sayari nyuki. Stemming from the idea that there is no other planet for us, no planet B, we should be focusing on bettering all people, not just only the few or fortunate. Focusing on educating and bettering the planet's population, across all cultures, all nations, all countries and all continents will benefit the progress of the world, making for a better future, more sustainable future, more productive future and a more equal future.
There is also the idea that without bees, the earth's ecosystems would be severely affected, thus effecting human life. Bees are essential to the natural and human environment for the cycles of life. Although bees are such a small creature, they have one of the greatest impacts on natural life and human life. Bees are symbolic of productivity, locality, loyalty, hard work, prosperity, community, brightness, sweetness, power of ones self, power in numbers and many many more symbolise that resonate with the vision and mission for this organisation, which compliments those of CHETI NGO, our partner organisation in Tanzania.
So the idea of a planet bee, where each person takes just one moment of their life to help someone else, the world would progress to be a better place. Although people may not be able to help out in great amounts, all the help that they can give will have an impact.
No matter how small you appear or you think yourself to be, you can still make a difference in the lives of others.
